Document attestation for use in the UAE and abroad

Attestation confirms that the signatures and seals on a document are genuine, so an authority in another country can rely on it. You need it when a degree, a marriage or birth certificate or a company document issued abroad is used in the UAE, and when a UAE document is used overseas. Caliph manages the full chain.

Overview

A UAE authority has no way to recognise the stamp of a registrar or a university in another country. Attestation solves that by building a chain. Each office confirms the signature of the one before it, until the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE adds the last stamp. Only then can the document be used for a visa, a licence or a court file.

For a document issued abroad, the chain starts at home. It is certified by the authorities in the issuing country, ending with that country's foreign ministry, then attested by the UAE embassy or consulate there, and finally by MOFA in the UAE. The first steps differ from country to country and by type of document, which is where most delays begin.

Documents issued in the UAE travel the other way. The entity that issued the document attests it first and MOFA attests it next. The last step is done either by the UAE embassy in the destination country or by that country's embassy in the UAE. Caliph checks which route your destination requires before anything is submitted.

Why clients give us their attestation work

The right chain for your document

A degree, a marriage certificate and a board resolution each start at a different office. We map the steps for your document and your country before you spend anything.

Originals checked before they travel

MOFA does not accept laminated documents and works from originals or verifiable digital documents. We check the condition and form of your papers first and keep track of every original in our care.

Translation arranged in the same file

If the document is not in Arabic or English, MOFA asks for a certified legal translation. We arrange it with a registered translator so one step does not block the other.

Personal and company papers together

Shareholders often need their own certificates attested at the same time as the parent company's documents. One consultant runs both sets.

Ready for the next authority

We ask where the document is going, whether that is immigration, the licensing authority or a bank, and make sure it arrives in the form that office accepts.

What to have ready

  • The original document, not laminated, or the official digital version with its QR code or reference number
  • A passport copy of the person named on the document
  • For degrees, both the certificate and the transcript, which are treated as separate documents
  • For company documents, the incorporation papers, resolution or power of attorney, as issued or notarised in the home country
  • Any attestations the document already carries from the issuing country
  • A certified legal translation if the document is not in Arabic or English
  • A note of where the document will be used and for what purpose

Requirements in the issuing country vary. Your Caliph consultant confirms what applies to your document and country before you send any originals.

How attestation works

  1. We identify the route

Your consultant confirms where the document was issued, where it will be used and which attestations it already carries.

  2. Certification in the issuing country

The document is certified by the competent authorities of the country that issued it, ending with that country's foreign ministry.

  3. UAE embassy or consulate

The UAE mission in that country attests the document. Some missions take applications online and others in person.

  4. MOFA attestation in the UAE

The original is submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its digital channels and the final attestation is added.

  5. Translation if required

Where the receiving authority needs Arabic, a registered legal translator translates the document.

  6. Handover and next filing

You receive the original back, and we use it for the visa, licence or other application it was prepared for.

Good to know

  • The UAE is not on the list of countries that have joined the Hague Apostille Convention. An apostille on its own does not replace attestation by the UAE embassy and MOFA.
  • Commercial invoices and certificates of origin for imported goods are attested through a separate MOFA electronic service, not through the service for personal and company documents.
  • Some UAE documents that carry a QR code or another verification feature can be attested digitally. Paper originals are collected and returned by courier.
  • Certain professions need a further step for the degree with the UAE education authorities. Tell your consultant which job title the certificate is for.

Questions people ask

Does the UAE accept an apostille?

The UAE has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone is not enough for a document to be used here. The document still needs attestation by the UAE embassy or consulate in the issuing country and then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE. If the rule changes, your consultant will tell you which route applies.

Which documents need attestation for a UAE visa?

It depends on the visa. Sponsoring a spouse or children normally involves an attested marriage certificate and attested birth certificates. Some job titles need an attested degree for the work permit. Immigration and labour authorities set the list, so we confirm it for your case before you start the process abroad.

How do I attest a UAE document for use in another country?

First the UAE entity that issued the document attests it. Then MOFA attests it. The last step depends on the destination: either the UAE embassy in that country or that country's embassy in the UAE adds its attestation. Caliph checks which one the receiving authority expects.

Do I have to travel to my home country to attest a document?

Usually not. MOFA states that another person can apply for attestation on your behalf. The steps in the issuing country are often handled by a family member or an agent there, depending on that country's rules, and you may need to sign an authorisation. Your consultant explains what your country's offices ask for.

Does an attested document expire?

MOFA states that its attestation has no expiry date. The authority receiving the document may still ask for a recently issued version of the certificate itself, so check with your consultant before you rely on an older attested document for a new application.

Can company documents be attested for a branch or a corporate shareholder?

Yes. When a foreign company opens a branch or holds shares in a UAE company, the licensing authority usually asks for its incorporation documents, a board resolution and a power of attorney, attested through the same chain. The exact list depends on the authority, and Caliph confirms it before the parent company starts.
