Visas and residence
Residence visa renewal and cancellation in the UAE
A UAE residence visa has to be renewed by its sponsor before it expires, and cancelled when the person leaves the company or the country. Renewal repeats the medical test for adults and renews the Emirates ID. Cancellation closes the work permit first, then the residence. Caliph manages both for owners, employees and families.

Overview
Every sponsored residence visa has a sponsor behind it: the company for an employee, the working parent for a family, the business for its partners. That sponsor is responsible for renewing the visa before it expires and for cancelling it when the relationship ends. The person who holds the visa cannot do either alone.
Renewal is a smaller version of the first application. The conditions that applied when the visa was issued must still be met, the passport needs at least six months of validity, adults take the medical fitness test again and the Emirates ID is renewed in the same application. For employees, the work permit and the contract are renewed as well.
Cancellation follows an order. An employer first cancels the work permit and labour contract with MOHRE, and the employee signs to confirm that wages and end-of-service benefits were received. Only then does immigration cancel the residence. Anyone who sponsors family members deals with their visas before their own. Caliph runs the sequence and keeps the papers that prove it was done.
What Caliph takes off your desk
Expiry dates watched for the whole company
We keep one schedule for every visa, Emirates ID and work permit under your licence and start each renewal ahead of its expiry date.
Renewal appointments booked
The medical test is done in person, and ICP may ask for fresh biometrics. We book the slots and send the applicant a short checklist.
Cancellations done in the right order
Work permit, residence, Emirates ID and any family visas are closed in the sequence the authorities require, so nothing stays open on your file.
Leavers handled correctly
When an employee resigns or is dismissed, we prepare the MOHRE cancellation for signature and remind you what must be settled before it is signed.
Clear dates after cancellation
We tell the person when their grace period ends, so they can leave or move to a new visa without overstaying.
What to have ready
- The visa holder's passport, valid for at least six months for a renewal
- The Emirates ID card
- A recent photo with a white background
- Valid health insurance, for a renewal
- The company's trade licence and establishment card, for employee and partner visas
- The work permit cancellation from MOHRE, when a private sector employee is leaving
- The sponsor's passport, with proof of relationship and tenancy for family renewals
- Proof that the licence was cancelled or the shares were transferred, when a partner's visa is cancelled
Free zone companies renew and cancel through their free zone authority, which has its own forms. Your consultant confirms the list for your case.
How renewal and cancellation work
Tell us what has changed
Your consultant checks the expiry dates, the passport and whether the person is staying, leaving or moving to another sponsor.
Renewal: medical and insurance
Applicants aged 18 and above take the medical fitness test again, and the health insurance is renewed.
Renewal: permit, residence, Emirates ID
We renew the work permit and contract where they apply, then file the residence renewal together with the Emirates ID.
Cancellation: close the work permit
For private sector staff the employer applies to MOHRE, and the employee signs that all dues were received.
Cancellation: cancel the residence
The sponsor applies to ICP or GDRFA Dubai. The Emirates ID is cancelled with the residence.
After cancellation
The person leaves, or moves to a new visa, within the grace period. We give you the cancellation paper for your records.
Good to know
- A residence visa is cancelled automatically if the holder stays outside the UAE for more than six months in a row. Some categories are exempt.
- A family member's visa cannot run beyond the sponsor's visa. Renew the sponsor first, then the dependants.
- A visa can be cancelled while the holder is inside or outside the UAE. The documents differ, so tell your consultant where the person is.
- ICP allows family visas to be placed on hold for a limited time while the sponsor moves to a new employer, instead of cancelling them.
Questions people ask
When should I renew my UAE residence visa?
Before it expires. The sponsor is responsible for renewing on time, and the Emirates ID expires on the same date as the visa. Residents can renew the Emirates ID during the last six months of its validity. Renewing the residence well ahead of expiry can need special approval, so your consultant confirms the earliest date in your case.
How long can I stay in the UAE after my visa is cancelled or expires?
You get a grace period, and its length depends on your residence category. The federal portal says it can reach six months for some categories, such as Golden Visa holders, while standard categories receive much less. Staying beyond it leads to daily overstay fines. Your Caliph consultant confirms the last date that applies to you when the cancellation is issued.
What must a company do when an employee leaves?
The employer cancels the work permit and labour contract with MOHRE first. The employee signs the cancellation, confirming that wages and end-of-service benefits were received. The company then applies to cancel the residence visa, and the Emirates ID is cancelled with it. Free zone companies do this through their free zone authority.
Can I cancel my own residence visa?
Not if someone sponsors you. Only the sponsor can apply, whether that is your employer or a family member. If you sponsor your own family, their visas must be cancelled, moved to another sponsor or put on hold before yours can be cancelled. A partner's visa is cancelled when the licence is cancelled or the shares are transferred.
Do I need a new medical test to renew my visa?
Yes, if you are 18 or older. The medical fitness certificate is needed to renew a residence as well as to obtain one, and residents who renew are screened for tuberculosis. You attend the centre in person. Renewals use your Emirates ID at registration, so bring the card.
What happens to my family's visas if my visa is cancelled?
Their residence is linked to yours, so it cannot continue without a sponsor. Before your visa is cancelled, their visas are cancelled, transferred or placed on hold. The federal portal states that dependants receive a grace period of six months to obtain a new permit after cancellation. Your consultant plans the order so nobody is left without status.
